Sandra bought Douwe, a Friesian gelding, in November 2008. He was imported from Holland as a driving horse and then ridden saddleseat and on trails. When Sandra bought Douwe he was extremely strong in the hand, unresponsive to the rider, very unbalanced with no engagement or topline, and was not motivated to work as a partner. For the first year they worked in the fields to strengthen his canter and developed long and low to lift his back. Sandra has created a trusting relationship with Douwe, performing exhibitions with fabric wings, only using her seat and legs to aid her horse. He is currently competing at Training Level with scores up to 73% and schooling lateral movements, piaffe, spanish walk and flying changes.
